Warkworth Golf Club was founded in 1891 and was originally designed by old Tom Morris. Set along the breathtaking Northumberland coastline, the club has approximately 450 members, a strong visitor customer base and a great reputation throughout Northumberland and beyond as a challenging 9-hole links course, cleverly designed to play as an 18-hole course with alternate tee positions. We are a members club, run by our members.
Our club has ambitious plans to further develop our offer to our members and visitors. We are seeking an enthusiastic, experienced, and motivated Head Greenkeeper to play a key role in enhancing the quality, presentation and long-term development of our course and club.
Over the past 5 years we have invested in and shall keep updating our greenkeeping machinery and equipment.
As Head Greenkeeper, you will be responsible for the day-to-day presentation, maintenance, and long-term development of the golf course. You will maintain high course standards while balancing environmental sustainability and efficient resource use.
The role reports directly to the Golf Club Committee, with day-to-day management and liaison by the Chair of the Greens Committee.
• Course maintenance: Manage daily preparation and long-term maintenance to provide consistently high-quality playing conditions including greens, teeing areas, fairways, practice ground, paths, flower beds, and car park
• Course improvements: Carry out course developments agreed by the Greens and Club Committees
• Team leadership: Lead, motivate, and develop the greenkeeping team, promoting pride, attention to detail, and safe working practices
• Agronomy and planning: Deliver effective agronomic programmes, including aeration, nutrition, overseeding, and irrigate the course effectively to promote healthy growth
• Machinery Maintenance: Carry out routine maintenance and minor repair of machinery
• Budget management: Manage and work within annual course maintenance and machinery budgets
• Health and Safety: Ensure full compliance with health and safety legislation, COSHH, and environmental regulations
• Meeting Attendance: Attend meetings of the Greens Committee as required and advise on all aspects of course maintenance and development
• Have previous greenkeeping experience, ideally as a Head Greenkeeper, Course Manager or Deputy Head Greenkeeper
• Have recent experience of working on a links course and with the environmental conditions related to climate change
• Have a strong understanding of modern turf machinery, sand-based greens and fairways
• Have experience of course construction, including tees, bunkers, drainage, pathways, and irrigation systems
• Demonstrate strong leadership, communication and organisational skills
• Be self-motivated with a positive, professional, and proactive attitude
• Hold professional membership of BIGGA
• Hold relevant qualifications (NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Turf Management or an equivalent qualification)
• Hold a full UK Driving Licence
