The formation of a Golf Club has often followed a pattern - a group of gentlemen interested in golf would meet , form a committee and rent a few fields to play on. Warkworth Golf Club however, had slightly different beginnings.
In 1891 a visiting couple from the south of England who walked the area whilst on holiday, wrote to the Editor of the Alnwick Mercury to urge that a golf course be built. The letter was headed 'Warkworth as a Centre of Golf in NE England'. The letter prompted a Public meeting and a committee was formed. Land was acquired, funds were raised and a well known expert, Tom Morris was employed to help plan the course.
